Air traffic in Riga has been increasing dramatically since some recent airport expansion efforts. In 2008, over 3.5 million passengers came through the gates, more than 6 times the amount in 2000. Luckily for the travelers, the airport officials have made it their goal to stay one step ahead of the amplifying passenger base. The airport received a 30 million dollar (USD) renovation in 2000 radically changing the façade and interior. The total square area was increased to 5 times the size of the previous terminal offering plenty of comfort and new amenities to its customers. There are even more expansions being constructed to handle the excess of Schengen traffic including the lengthening of the runway to allow large planes to operate safely.
